WHAT IS A BLACKBERRY?
These dark, delicious fruits are from prickly bushes that are members of the rose family. Similar to raspberries but black in color, the blackberry is often thought to have originated in North America, but it’s a European import. They are both easy to gr0w and perrenial!
WHY ARE BLACKBERRIES GOOD FOR YOU?
They are rich in ellagic acid (an anti-oxidant) as well as the vitamins A,C and K. Blackberries are also a good source of fiber and the mineral manganese.
WHEN ARE BLACKBERRIES IN SEASON?
They are a summer harvest if you can get to them before all the birds do!
HOW SHOULD BLACKBERRIES BE STORED?
When picking them from a plant, only select blackberries that are fully mature. They’ll be a solid black or deep purple color, plump but still firm to the touch. They are highly perishable and easily susceptible to mold so refrigerate as soon as possible. However you’ll still need to consume them within several days.
ARE BLACKBERRIES STILL CONSIDERED TO HAVE BEEN PISSED ON BY THE DEVIL?
In medieval times, this fruit was only eaten until September 29th each year. On that date was the feast of Michaelmas (named after the Archangel Michael). It was this angel who banished Lucifer to Hell. According to legend, any blackberry after this date is at risk for being urinated and spit upon.
