You can make your Five-Spice powder with either ground spices or whole spices you grind together. Spice mix purists will insist you grind as you go for maximum freshness but sometimes that just isn’t practical. As long as your pre-ground spices are fresh, they’ll make a good mix. Just remember to store the final product in an air tight jar.
WHAT PAIRS WELL WITH 5 SPICE POWDER?
This spice mix is unbelievably versatile, but it is a safe bet with many Asian ingredients and recipes. I’d avoid other dishes that are already spicy (like Kimchi) because of the potential flavor discord. But even a dressing using sesame oil or a creme brulee could work well. Beverage-wise, whatever dish you use this mix in you’re pairing your beverage to these spices rather then the chicken or duck or pork that it flavors.
